Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Brown Scapular

While it is still July, it seems to be a good idea to reflect on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel that just passed and the importance of the Brown Scapular.

The Brown Scapular is associated with the Carmelite Order and the discalced Carmelites. It is the habit of the Carmelites – something that is worn. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel gave the Brown Scapular to St. Simon Stock, a member of the Carmelite Order.

The Sabbatine privilege is associated with the Brown Scapular. Essentially it is a promise that a soul will be released from Purgatory on the Saturday after his death. For that to occur, the wearer of the Brown Scapular has to meet certain conditions. The conditions can be substituted with the Rosary, and that is a popular practice.

People might enroll in the Brown Scapular. To do that, a layman might ask a priest to help him to enroll.

An excellent way of encouraging family members to pray the Rosary every day would be encouraging them to enroll in the Brown Scapular. If somebody wants to help with his family member’s salvation, it might be a great idea to help that family member enroll.
